Too often, I have known of instances where the primary credit cardholder passes away suddenly, and within days the bank cancels the account1. They do this to stop fraud or new debt. This often means if their partner has no income and no card in their own name, they may be left unable to pay for essentials such as groceries, let alone funeral costs.
Why timing matters
Lenders in Australia must assess affordability based on your own income before approving a card2. If you are leaving paid employment, whether through retirement or redundancy, it is far harder to qualify later. Applying while you still have a payslip is the smart window.
The risks of relying on one cardholder
- Supplementary cards are cancelled the moment the primary holder dies, regardless of the relationship3.
- Joint accounts may also be frozen or reassessed during separation or estate administration.
- Multiple rejected applications can damage your credit score over time.
Building your own financial footing
- Apply for a card in your own name while employed, even a low-limit one.
- Keep it active with small regular purchases to build a credit history.
- Maintain your own bank account alongside any joint arrangements.
